Harry Dunn's comments on the motto:
Mullach-Abu (Aboo) means "Victory - from the Hills (or
Mountains)". The O'Duinns, Lords of Ui Riagain and earlier of Tara-Bregia,
migrated to an area of southern Ui Failge territory (now Co Offaly) around the 10th Century and named the territory after an ancestor Riagain - one of the
four Kings of Tara. The area - later named (by the Brits) Barony of Tenehinch and now
Tinnahich, is the most northern barony of Co Leix (Laois, pronounced "Leesh"). The area is bordered on the west and south by the Slieb Bloom Mountains and in earlier
times was also bordered heavily with bogs. Their ability to attack, ambush and recede into the mountains of the Slieve Bloom led to their victory call of
Mullach Abu.
