Established in 1971, the San Antonio RFC strives to be one of Texas' finest rugby clubs. With excellent coaching and management , the Armadillos play year round in every part of the country. SARFC is a non-profit organization, dedicated to the sport of rugby and to the city of San Antonio. The SARFC participates in community service work by feeding the homeless at the San Antonio Mission Shelter. Some of the sponsors supporting the club are Bud Co. and The Crazy Horse Saloon.

History

The San Antonio Rugby Football Club (SARFC) was founded in early 1971 by an Air Force doctor named Harry Laws. Harry and a few of his friends decided that San Antonio needed another attraction besides the Alamo, Riverwalk, and HemisFair Plaza. Starting with a old beat-up rugby ball and few medical students playing on a city park field which was harder than a parking lot, Dr. Laws proceeded to build a team that is highly competitive in the Texas Rugby Union.

By 1973, SARFC had became a respectable club side. In 1975, SARFC was second in the Texas Rugby Union Championship. In 1976 San Antonio won the Marde Gras Tournament, and its' first Texas Rugby Union Championship. The most recent achievements are, winners of the 1988-89 Texas Rugby Union Senior "B" Division Champions, 1989 & 1991 South Texas Champions, and 1990 & 1991 Texas Rugby Union 7s Champions, Texas Rugby Union Championship

The armadillo has been the traditional club mascot...this must say something for the physical characteristics and behavioral patterns of the club members. Through the years the club has been made up of people from all walks of life, such as doctors, lawyers pilots, teachers, college and university students, servicemen from all branches, bank executives, appraisers, computer operators, salesmen, oil riggers, firemen, policemen, construction workers, carpenters, and bartenders, just to name a few.

The San Antonio Rugby Football Club has come a long way since those first days. Dr Laws is now promoting military rugby, no matter where he goes.
